abr / latten shelving system

ABR, exciting Spanish newcomers on the furniture front, wow with their Latten shelving system. Its concept is simple, but wait until you hear how it's executed. Designed by Hannes Gumpp, Max Gumpp & Toni Pallejahese, these shelves are actually created with... chairs. The materials used are pine chairs with MDF seats and thin pine planks in a natural finish to add stability lengthwise, while planks in seven lacquered colours secure the unusual components vertically. It's all bound together with humble plastic ties. Wow. Woweeeee.

radio canada; science & sons

As a fan of both the CBC and of Toronto-based Science + Sons, Radio Canada Our Home and Native Waves was destined to be a big hit with me. I love, I want. Science + Sons have designed a handsome maple & aluminum radio prototype that's inspired by "the dedication of the many CBC listeners who keep their radio dials permanently set to our national broadcaster". That's me! Like a dream come true, this radio is meant to be tuned, and set, to your community's CBC Radio One and CBC Radio Two frequencies. You can then toggle patriotically between the two. It's also MP3 compatible.

frederik roijé; metrobowl

Love Dutch Designer Frederik Roijé's work; always clever & clean-lined. His new collection is called Metrobowl and features cast-aluminum scale models of maps of Amsterdam & New York- as striking 3d bowls.

elisa strozyk; miss maple

This is one of these most beautiful designs I've seen this year. Miss Maple is a flexible lampshade made from a solid material; wood. Textile designer (and recent graduate of Central Saint Martins with a Masters degree in Future Textile Design) Elisa Strozyk has created something brilliant she calls Wooden Textiles. The material involves deconstructing wood into triangles that are added, by hand, to a textile base, creating a flexible wood fabric.

So brilliant, so beautiful.

The last image shows a detail of Strozyk's Wooden Textiles. Rest assured, this young designer has several swoon-worthy pieces featured on her website.

miyake lamp for moooi

Ingenious!

Instead of adjusting the head or neck to tweak your light just so, the Miyake lamp by Studio Arihiro Miyake asks that you adjust the base instead. Turn the asteroidal base a little this way, lift it just so, and your light shines differently.

The base is made of sturdy powder-coated concrete and the light source is a halogen bulb. Moooi should be putting Miyake into production later this year.

kitmen; hexis multifunction coaster

How brilliant are Canadian designer Kitmen Keung's Hexis coasters? The shape looks great on its own, amazing grouped together. And that little indent you see is actually an inward sloping corner that's the perfect resting spot for your spoon or stir stick. Or perhaps your pencil.

 

keisuke fujiwara; spool chair

Tokyo designer Keisuke Fujiwara wrapped Thonet's iconic bentwood chairs in kilometers of thread to create his Spool Chair project. Fujiwara created two versions of the Spool: Fire & Ice. They undoubtedly took countless hours of meticulous work to create -to stunning effect.

kile bookcase by yukari hotta

The Danish word Kile translates into Wedge, and cute wood-painted wedges are the only tools used to secure this clever bookcase by Japanese-born Yukari Hotta. Hotta graduated from the Industrial Design program at Kolding Design School in Denmark in 2007 and designed the Kile last year. 

Hope someone starts manufacturing this brilliant design very soon!

borrod table by line depping

As life gets more hectic and has you taking on more and more endeavors, doesn't it seem as though the Borrod Table by Line Depping is, really, a necessity? Beyond being beautiful -good bones and lovely materials- its function as a table goes far beyond the norm.

Made from ash wood and Kvadrat fabric. Next I'm hoping for a hide-it-all sofa, perhaps a kitchen counter...
